چکیده
Densification is one method used to modify low-density woods make them achieve the hardness required for flooring application. The purpose of this study was investigate effect thermo-mechanical densification with pre-heating in wood Alnus acuminata, Vochysia ferruginea and guatemalensis from, seeking stabilize reduce spring-back densified evaluate its performance applications. results showed that three species turned dark. This because brightness diminished yellowness redness increased. Weight loss due statistically higher V. guatemalensis. final density were similar species. percentage A. acuminata than degree compression As evaluation, densification, temperature time affected behavior flooring. low high weight stage caused greater values wear, wear index, residual deformation, indentation falling ball test, more damages surface test ferruginea.

A pharmacological survey of plants from Monteverde, Costa Rica, including 165 species representing 61 families has been carried out. Crude plant extracts have been tested for in-vitro bactericidal and fungicidal activity as well as cytotoxic and anti-herpes activity. Of these, 123 extracts exhibited notable cytotoxicity, 62 showed antibacterial activity, 4 showed antifungal activity, and 8 show...
متن کاملAnnual wood production in a tropical rain forest in NE Costa Rica linked to climatic variation
Increased atmospheric [CO2] could theoretically lead to increased forest productivity (‘CO2 fertilization’). This mechanism was hypothesized as a possible explanation for biomass increases reported from tropical forests in the last 301 years. We used unique long-term records of annually measured stands (eighteen 0.5 ha plots, 10 years) and focal tree species (six species, 24 years) to assess th...

Twenty-five black river turtles (Rhinoclemmys funerea) and eight white-lipped mud turtles (Kinosternon leucostomum) from Selva Verde, Costa Rica were examined for haemoparasites. Leeches identified as Placobdella multilineata were detected on individuals from both species. All turtles sampled were positive for intraerythrocytic haemogregarines (Apicomplexa:Adeleorina) and the average parasitemi...
متن کاملEngineered Wood Flooring with a Densified Surface Layer for Heavy-duty Use
High-density wood is required in wood flooring, especially in engineered wood flooring (EWF) designed for heavy-duty applications. However, high-density wood resources are limited and their cost is high. A densification treatment makes it possible for lowor moderate-density woods to replace harder species by modifying them into highperformance and high-value products, such as engineered wood fl...
متن کاملThree new species of Spiladarcha Meyrick, 1913 (Lepidoptera: Urodidae) from Costa Rica.
Three new species of Spiladarcha are described from Costa Rica, including S. puravida n. sp., S. septifera n. sp., and S. tuberculata n. sp. The genus Spiladarcha is reported from Costa Rica for the first time. Synapomorphies of Spiladarcha are revised. Photos of adult habitus and genitalia of known sexes are provided.
